PydanticAI is a Python agent framework created by Samuel Colvin and the Pydantic team, released in late 2024. Built on top of the same data validation library that tens of thousands of Python projects depend on, PydanticAI applies Pydantic's core philosophy — strong typing, runtime validation, and developer ergonomics — to the domain of AI agent development. The framework is model-agnostic, supporting OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Groq, Mistral, and Ollama out of the box. Key Features#

Type-Safe Agent Definitions In PydanticAI, agents are defined using Python type annotations and Pydantic models throughout. The framework uses generics to encode the result type of an agent at the type level, meaning your IDE and static analysis tools know exactly what an agent will return before you run it. This eliminates entire categories of runtime errors common in other frameworks where LLM outputs are treated as untyped strings.

Runtime Output Validation PydanticAI validates LLM outputs against your defined Pydantic models at runtime. If the model returns a response that doesn't conform to the expected schema, the framework can automatically retry the request with a corrected prompt, dramatically improving reliability for structured output use cases. This retry behavior is configurable and logged for observability.

Model-Agnostic Design Unlike SDKs tied to a single provider, PydanticAI abstracts over multiple LLM backends with a unified interface. Switching between GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Gemini 1.5 Pro requires changing a single parameter. This portability is valuable for teams doing cost optimization, A/B testing between models, or maintaining fallback providers for reliability.

Dependency Injection System PydanticAI features a clean dependency injection pattern inspired by FastAPI. Agents declare their dependencies (database connections, API clients, configuration objects) via typed parameters, and these are provided at runtime. This makes agents highly testable — you can inject mock dependencies in tests without monkey-patching or complex setup.

Logfire Integration The Pydantic team's observability product, Logfire, integrates natively with PydanticAI to provide structured logging, tracing, and metrics for agent runs. While Logfire is a commercial product, the integration is optional and PydanticAI works fine without it using standard Python logging.

Pricing#

PydanticAI is free and open-source under the MIT license. No subscription or license fee is required to use the framework. API costs depend entirely on which LLM provider you integrate. It is less suitable for developers who need high-level workflow abstractions like crews, pipelines, or visual flow builders — PydanticAI is a lower-level, code-first framework.

Strengths#

Best-in-class structured outputs. No other Python framework handles LLM output validation as rigorously. The automatic retry-on-validation-failure behavior alone saves significant engineering effort in production data pipelines.

FastAPI-style ergonomics. Developers familiar with FastAPI will find PydanticAI's dependency injection, decorator-based tool registration, and type-driven design immediately intuitive, reducing onboarding time.

Genuine model portability. The abstraction layer is thin enough that switching providers rarely requires restructuring agent logic, unlike frameworks where provider-specific quirks leak through the abstraction.

Limitations#

Smaller ecosystem. PydanticAI launched later than LangChain or LlamaIndex, meaning the community of plugins, integrations, and tutorials is still growing. Teams solving novel problems may find less community support than with more established frameworks.

Less suited for complex multi-agent orchestration. While PydanticAI supports multi-agent patterns, it does not provide high-level abstractions for roles, hierarchical agent teams, or complex conditional workflows. Teams needing that structure may find CrewAI or LangGraph more appropriate.
